Men with discerning tastes are looking to add dressier options to their wardrobes. Fashion houses and businesses offering tailoring services are capitalizing on this demand for suits, and they’re introducing many exciting collections that are sure to suit every budget and situation. To help you stay your stylish best, we’ve put together some of 2017’s top suit trends.
The Fit
Year after year the not-so-humble suit continues to evolve. While suit styles have slimmed over the past few years, we’re now seeing a more relaxed fit being introduced into the market in 2017. We’re not talking about big and loose armholes or baggy pants but a more relaxed and comfortable cut, perfect for daily use. A lot of guys are also opting in favor of custom creations. These made-to-order suits are tailored exactly according to the buyer’s specifications and requirements. They accentuate the right areas and hide imperfections.
Double or Single?
Single-breasted jackets are all the rage this year. So if you want to dress yourself up for success, shop for single-breasted jackets with two buttons and a notch lapel. The bottom button is generally left undone even when you’re standing. Shawl collar jackets are also becoming increasingly popular this year. They’re mostly reserved for black tie events or red carpet galas, though.
Fabric
When it comes to fabric, you’re really spoiled for choice. Look for crease-proof, water-resistant and lightweight fabrics that are durable and comfortable as well. If you’re planning to wear a suit in the summers opt for natural fibers that absorb moisture. Cotton, linen, silk, and seersucker are good options. While they’re all great fabrics for the warmer months, they may stain and crease easily. If the mercury drops, opt for fabrics like wool or a wool-cashmere blend. Men are also ditching traditional blue, black and gray suits in favor of suits with mottled effects. These mottled suits add soft texture and leave you looking sharp at work or social events.
Color
From what we’ve seen on the runway and in stores this year, suits are boldly embracing colors and patterns. They are definitely in the midst of a style revolution, and they’re no longer limited to boring blacks, grays, and blues. The color of the year is definitely olive green. It compliments all skin tones and looks fantastic for work or dinner parties. You could pair it with a white shirt and dark brown shoes or wear it over a sky blue shirt instead. Plaid suits are also making a comeback. You could look for darker wool styles and pair them with solid rope knitted sweaters for the winters or choose brighter shades for the summer months.
Accessories
Most of us are well aware of some of the most popular suit accessories—cufflinks, ties, lapel pins, pocket squares, etc. But what’s really trending this season is ‘fold-down shoes.’ These convertible shoes look like a regular pair of loafers, but they come with an unstructured leather fold-down back. You can essentially flatten down the back, so it slips under your heel and turns into a mule. Apart from these convertible shoes, we see big and bold sunglasses on the runway. Tortoiseshell continues to remain popular amidst other eye-catching designs. Try on a pair of Acetate Overlay sunglasses. They’re quite the rage this year.
If you’re not great at choosing the right contrasting colors, you could always play it safe by wearing neutral shades and incorporating textured ties or waistcoats to add an element of interest. There several types of lapel pins and other accessories available today. Remember to be creative and choose items that truly reflect your personal style.
